Undergraduate Course Enrollment Request

Interested in taking a course with the Department of Computer Science, but can't enroll yourself? Follow the instructions below to request that enrollment.

Important Information: START HERE

Spring 2027 requests will open TBD.
Summer 2027 requests will open TBD.

1. Please save a PDF copy of your unofficial NC State Transcript before beginning this process.
2. Identify which course(s) you wish to request enrollment.
3. Click on the course request form for the correct semester and complete one form for all requested courses.
4. Once you have completed your request(s), you are done! Requests are manually reviewed by the indicated date, and each student will be notified of their status.
5. Please read the FAQ pages for more information.

This form should be used when you have tried to enroll yourself and received an error message. It should not be used for CLOSED sections or for students who are otherwise eligible to enroll. Please wait to fill out a form until after you have tried to enroll on your own via My Pack Portal.

Often, grades are needed before enrollment requests can be reviewed to be sure students have passed the pre-requisites where applicable.
Students who CODA into Computer Science (or their desired major/minor) before the review process, however, will be able to self-enroll through the MyPack Portal–no form needed.

CSC Courses

  • Fall & Spring: On Campus requests only!
  • Summer: On Campus and Online classes can be requested.

E 115

  • Students who are requesting E 115 and a CSC 11* class should NOT enroll or wait-list in E 115 – 302.
  • Fall: Only students who will CODA in December are eligible to request
  • Spring: Sections 302 and 303 have no restrictions, so if you need to enroll in only E 115, please self-enroll.

Form Instructions

We sincerely hope to be able to accommodate all students who need the requested class(es) for their intended major or minor. These request forms are used by all students if they cannot enroll on their own, regardless of their enrollment date or priority registration status. This one process allows for an equitable enrollment process.

All students will be enrolled or contacted before the last day of enrollment. Your patience is appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

As an Incoming Engineering First Year or Transfer Student, I can’t enroll and I worry about the course filling up. Can you enroll me now?

A number of seats are reserved for incoming Engineering First Year students and incoming College of Engineering Transfer students. This saves seats for students in this situation until we evaluate their requests.

Can you make an exception for me (for any reason)?

No, we do not make any exceptions to this process and we appreciate your patience as we try to enroll all students who have put in request forms.

Are most requests approved?

The CSC Department is usually able to place a majority of students who meet the pre- and co-requisites of the course(s) they have requested.

CSC 111 and CSC 113

Computer Science majors or Computer Science Intent students are not permitted to enroll in CSC 111 or CSC 113.

The only exception is for a student who is intending to change their major and the course is required for that major.

I have applied to CODA, is a spot guaranteed for me?

Successful enrollment does not guarantee CODA consideration by the College of Engineering.

Who should I hear back from?

Typically the Coordinator of Undergraduate Advising for the Computer Science Department reviews and processes all of the submitted forms.

You should not e-mail the advising staff unless you wish to remove your request or add a request to an already submitted form.

Your patience is truly appreciated.

How long should it take?

This process can sometimes take a few weeks or even a month or two to complete.

You should not e-mail the advising staff unless you wish to remove your request or add a request to an already submitted form.

Your patience is truly appreciated.

MyPack Portal has listed the course as closed, but I prefer to be enrolled in that section. Can I still be enrolled?

Sometimes a section will be listed as “Closed” in MyPack.

This may mean the class and wait list (if available) are full , that the room is filled to capacity, or the teacher/grader/student ratio has been met.

The Undergraduate Advising Office will do our best to enroll students if there is room in the classroom, but cannot enroll students past classroom or resource capacity.

You are welcome to include your preferences, but sometimes a closed section cannot have students added to it.

Do not panic if there are no more available seats, sometimes we are able to locate a larger room or sometimes we are able to enroll past the cap. However, it is not always the case, so your patience is appreciated as we go through the forms.

Will the Department of Computer Science accept substitutions?

The Computer Science Department will accept some courses in substitution of other courses.

How many credit hours can I take?

NC State has a maximum number of credit hours for full time and NDS students.

Full time students are limited to eighteen (18) credit hours per semester.

Your academic advisor may allow for more credit hours, but the CSC Department will not enroll you in any CSC course that will put you above 18 due to the intensity of the coursework.

Non-Degree students (NDS) are allowed a maximum of six (6) credit hours per semester.

I want to take the Distance Education section instead, can you enroll me in that one?

The Computer Science Department cannot enroll you in any Distance Education CSC courses.

Distance Education courses are denoted by the 60* section number.

During the Spring and Fall semesters, DE sections are *fully* reserved for Computer Certificate students.

During the Summer only, students may request enrollment into the distance sections.

Submitting a form on this site is only for *on campus* or *online delivery* sections (ie. 00* or 30* section number).

How do I know if I am eligible to fill out this form?

A list of students who are eligible to submit an enrollment request form:

  • full time undergraduate students
  • part time undergraduate students
  • undergraduate students looking to change their major
  • undergraduate students looking to add or continue in the Computer Programming Minor

Students who are not eligible to submit an enrollment request form:

  • Non-Degree students (NDS, PBS)
  • Graduate students
  • Students who will be above 18 credit hours with enrollment into the requested course
  • Students who have time conflicts on their schedule
  • Students who do not meet the pre- or co-requisites

What should I do if I am a Graduate or Non-Degree Seeking (NDS) Student?

On Campus CSC undergraduate classes are reserved for undergraduate degree seeking students.

Seats will not be released as they are a required course for undergraduate majors and minors.

E 115 is typically waived for Graduate students.

CSC 1** courses are aimed at undergraduate students who do not have any prior programming experience, or require it for their major/minor. Students with programming experience in any language do not typically find these classes useful.

If your program requires a graduate level programming course and you have not had an introductory programming course, you may get permission from your academic advisor and send a direct note to Ms. Marini via e-mail.

All students are required to take CSC classes for a grade or credit-only, we do not allow auditors.

Graduate students should wait to send an e-mail request to Ms. Marini. The e-mail request should come no sooner than 5 days before the start of the term. Please also be sure to copy your advisor on the email.

There is not typically room for Graduate or Non-Degree students in our undergraduate CSC classes.

Can the Prerequisites and Co-requisites be waived?

Pre-requisites and co-requisites are not waived by the Department of Computer Science.

Co-requisites may be taken before or in the same semester.

Pre-requisites must be taken before.

If I have permission from the instructor, can I be added directly to the course?

Permission from the instructor of a course does not guarantee you a seat in the course.

Exceptions cannot be made by instructors as these rules are enforced by the Department.

While it is fine to ask for permission to take the course and include that in the form, it is not required.

Permission from an instructor or academic advisor is insufficient as the only way to enroll in one of the aforementioned courses.

Is priority given to form submissions?

Priority is usually given to students as follows:

  1. Students that need a class for their current or intended major
  2. Students that need a class for their current or intended minor
  3. Others by request

Editing your form or time of submission does not affect in any way, shape, or form how or when you are processed.

What is the general process for enrollment?

The general process for enrollment is as follows:

  1. Computer Science Majors are allowed to enroll in all CSC *** courses.
  2. Engineering First Year students who are Computer Science Intended are allowed to enroll in all CSC courses in the Minor. Declared Computer Programming Minors may enroll themselves in CSC 216, 217, 226, 230, 316, 236, and 246.
  3. Students who are not in any of the aforementioned groups should first attempt to enroll on their own, as there are a small number of unreserved seats.
    • Students who are able to enroll on their own do not need to fill out a request form.
    • Students who are unable to enroll on their own do need to fill out a request form.
  4. Forms are reviewed by the Undergraduate Advising Office.
  5. Students who meet pre- and co-requsities are then enrolled, space permitting, in an open section that fits their schedule. The Advising Office does their best to adhere to preferences.
    • Students who are enrolled will receive an e-mail asking to verify their schedule
    • Students who are not enrolled will receive an e-mail with reasoning as to why
  6. Students who are not enrolled in their first preference will be able to ask to swap sections, should space remain, on the first day of classes.

Class adds for E 115 and CSC courses can only be approved by the CSC Undergraduate Advising Office.

Filling out a form allows a student to request enrollment into a course. All enrollment requests are done manually by the CSC Advising Office.

I prefer one section over another, how is that considered when reviewing my request?

Many of the courses offered will have more than one section available for request.

In the case where more than one section is offered, you are given the opportunity to give us your section preferences.

Google Forms allows you to update your reply.

Be assured that if there is an open seat that the advising staff will do their best to enroll you in a seat — even if it is not listed as a preference.

I have a time conflict, how is that considered when reviewing my request?

The Department of Computer Science does not enroll students in courses for which there is a time conflict.

No exceptions are made to this rule.

Example: A class you are enrolled in is listed as meeting M/W/F from 1:30 – 2:30 pm. In class, your professor tells you Wednesdays will meet online and never in person. You then wish to enroll in a Wednesday E 115 class that meets from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. You will not be enrolled.

Example: You are enrolled in a MEA 100 course as a placeholder in case you are not able to get into CSC 116. The CSC Department does not have the power to drop a non-CSC course for you, so you will not be enrolled.

What is the timeline for this process?

The Undergraduate Course Enrollment Request page usually has the time line very clearly written and updated periodically.

Here is a general time line:
