Transfer of Credits Into the Masters Degree
Students who have earned graduate credits at NC State or at other Universities may be considered for transfer into a Computer Science Masters program.
The official Graduate School policy on credit transfers is available here.
Courses Taken at NC State
Students with a Masters in Computer Science or a related field from NC State who start the PhD degree in the semester immediately following the one in which they completed the Masters degree, i.e., without a “break” in their studies (a summer session does not constitute a “break”) have all 31 Masters credits transferred into the PhD degree. Therefore, such students only need to complete 41, rather than 72, credits to complete the PhD degree requirements. This credit transfer happens automatically – students do not need to take any action.
Credits earned while enrolled in a previous graduate degree program. A maximum of 12 credits completed while a student was enrolled in a previous graduate program at NC State University may be considered for transfer to the Masters program, provided that each course:
- was letter-graded at the 500-or 700-level;
- the grade is B or better; and
- it was not taken as a part of a completed Masters degree at another institution.
PBS credits. A maximum of 12 credit hours taken while a student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer to the MAsters program provided that each course:
- was letter-graded at the 500-or 700-level;
- the grade is B or better; and
- the credits were competed before the student was admitted to the Masters degree program.
Courses Taken at Another Institution
At most 12 credits earned at an accredited US college or university may be considered for transfer to the Masters program provided that each course:
- is classified as a graduate course;
- was completed while the students was in graduate or post-baccalaureate classification;
- was not taken as part of a previous Masters degree program at another institution; and
- the grade is B or better.
If you wish to receive credit for courses taken at another institution, make sure that the Graduate School has received an official copy of your transcripts. Then, fill out and sign the transfer credit form and send it by email to the CSC DGP.
Transfer of Credits Into a Graduate Certificate Program
Courses from other institutions cannot be transferred into a graduate certificate.
A graduate course that was completed while a student was enrolled in PBS status at NC State University may be considered for transfer to the graduate certificate provided that:
- it is at the 500-or 700-level;
- the grade is B or better; and
- the course was competed before the student was admitted to the certificate program.
