Each minor belongs to the department that offers the minor, so you will want to ask the minor advisor for all of their departmental policies. CSC is happy to allow you to count a minor class once for your minor and once for your major if the class exists in more than one category.

 </details>

<details class="wp-block-ncst-accordion-item" name="" >

What GEP course(s) should I take?

That can be a very personal decision. We generally advise you to take courses that: you are interested in, meet degree requirements, you are eligible to enroll in, and fit in your schedule. As always, check your degree audit after enrollment to make sure the class you’ve enrolled in sorts into the category you intend.

 </details>

<details class="wp-block-ncst-accordion-item" name="" >

A class isn’t in my degree audit where I thought it should be, what should I do?

First, check if it is in a different category. Classes that exist in more than one category will sort into the first category the degree audit comes across.

If it’s in the non-degree section, check the “details” of the category you want to put the class in and check that the class is part of that category. Keep in mind there are certain restrictions on GEPs or additional steps you may have to take if it’s a research/project or special topic class.

If you’ve followed all of those steps and feel the class should/can still be moved, please use the degree audit shift request form on our Forms page.

 </details>

<details class="wp-block-ncst-accordion-item" name="" >

Can I sign up for courses that do not count toward my degree requirements?

While the University does not have any rules against this, we advise you to consider the following:

Does the class have a lot of empty seats or is there a long waitlist? If there is a long waitlist, perhaps you should consider a different class to allow those that need the class for their degree requirements to enroll.

Is this class required for a job, graduate program, or other opportunity?

If you are on federal financial aid or a scholarship, they usually require that you are enrolled in at least 12 hours that go toward a degree requirement. So if this extra class is your 12th hour, it may not be fulfilling the “full time requirement” that you think it is. Please check with your financial aid or scholarship advisor, as appropriate.

 </details>

<details class="wp-block-ncst-accordion-item" name="" >

When can I enroll in summer classes?

Summer class enrollment usually begins at the same time as enrollment for Spring classes. All three shopping carts are available in the Enrollment Wizard via a drop-down menu. We advise enrolling in Spring classes first, then Summer I, then Summer II (if applicable). Students have a longer window for summer enrollment, allowing time to edit summer schedules. For enrollment dates , important deadlines, and more, review the University’s Enrollment Calendar.

 </details>

<details class="wp-block-ncst-accordion-item" name="" >

What is the purpose of completing the semester planning template?

Although NC State provides many tools* for semester planning, the advising team is also unable to see all of these tools at the same time in the way that allows them to best advise you. This is why we came up with a semester planning template. It’s a one-size-fits-all spreadsheet that you make a copy of and then can tailor to your individual needs. Once shared with the advising team, you can then go back and forth (synchronously or asynchronously). You can also include high impact activities you plan to engage in (like co-op, Study Abroad, etc.) or if you will be traveling, taking time off, etc.

The semester planning spreadsheet is best used for long term planning, but can also be used to help answer questions like “will dropping class x delay my intended graduation?”, “how long will it take me to graduate?”, etc. By using the prepared semester sequence in tandem with your degree audit, you can come up with a plan and then run it by an advisor. Each future semester may require just a bit of updating, but once you’ve done the hard work once — pre-registration advising should then be a breeze!

*Tools definitions:

The degree audit is a list of all specific classes/categories you need to complete in order to achieve a specific major or minor. For Computer Science all degree plans are 121 specific hours, broken down into different categories.

The semester sequence is a proposed plan for how to complete a degree from start to finish with no summers, no transfer credits, and in exactly 8 semesters. It meets all pre-requisites, is balanced, and was developed by each department. Students are advised to stick as closely to this plan as possible, but there are some items that can be swapped around depending on availability.

The Pack Planner is a way to take classes and place them in a semester by semester plan. However, it doesn’t always work 100% correctly or give you the most accurate information. It also doesn’t allow you to see multiple plans at once (for example if you’re trying to decide between concentrations or minors, etc.).

 </details>

{"pageIntro":"FAQ’s specific to registration.
