Building a CV

You may be required to submit a CV for a job application -- but what is a CV?

CV stands for curriculum vitae, which translates to “course of life” in Latin. They are often required when applying to academic jobs like teaching or research positions. CVs are used to outline a person’s entire education, publications, honors, accomplishments, projects, awards, and professional experience. While resumes are typically limited to 1-2 pages in length, there is no length limit for a CV, and they tend to be much longer than a resume.

The main sections you want to include are:

Header with contact information

Education section with your degrees and relevant coursework

Technical Skills

Research Experiences

Work Experience

Memberships/Affiliations

Certifications

Other Sections if Applicable :

Publications

Presentations and Lectures

Community Service/Volunteering

Grants/Fellowships/Scholarships

Awards and Honors

Conferences

An Example CV:
